The Senna biopic on Netflix has advanced with the release of its first teaser.
When the series premieres later this year, Gabriel Leone will portray the eponymous driver. The trailer chronicles his momentous triumph at the 1991 Brazilian Grand Prix in Interlagos, after an arduous race during which he spent the majority of the time mired in sixth gear. Furthermore, it signifies his inaugural triumph in his native Sao Paulo.
Interspersed with images of the race, the teaser also depicts potential thoughts and experiences that guided Senna to the point in his career where he passed away tragically in 1994. Beginning with the three-time Formula One champion’s motor racing career’s inception when he transferred to England to compete in Formula Ford, the six-parter continues until his tragic accident during the San Marino Grand Prix in Imola, Italy.
Senna also features Kaya Scodelario, whose mother is Brazilian and who has recently completed a role in the Netflix series The Gentlemen.
Fabiano Gullane and Caio Gullane, in collaboration with Julia Rezende and Vicente Amorim as co-directors and showrunners, respectively, produce Senna with the backing of Senna Brands and the driver’s family. An international cast also includes Alice Wegmann (Ayrton’s first wife Lilian Vasconcelos), Camila Márdila (his sister Viviane Senna), Christian Malheiros (his friend Maurinho), Gabriel Louchard (Galvão Bueno), Hugo Bonemer (Nelson Piquet), Julia Foti (Adriane Galisteu), Marco Ricca (“Maurão” Senna, his father), Nicolas Cruz (his brother Leonardo Senna), Rodrigo Veloso (his brother Flavio), and Susana Ribeiro (Zaza Senna) in the film. Gustavo Braganca serves as the principal scriptwriter, while Álvaro Campos, Gustavo Braganca, Rafael Spínola, Thais Falcão, and Álvaro Mamute contribute as authors. Amorim and Jlia Rezende are serving as directors.
In 2011, an Asif Kapadia documentary about Senna won two BAFTAs.
