Normani Embraces ‘Grace’ and ‘Forgiveness’ Amid Backlash for Album Delay

On Friday, June 14, Normani released her much-awaited debut album, Dopamine

With her delayed debut album due to be released, Normani recently talked about managing pressure.

Early in 2018, the former Fifth Harmony member—who has been hyping her much-awaited album—teased the album at her website, “wheresthedamnalbum.com.”

Normani explained why the record was delayed in an interview with The Guardian.

In 2020, the singer said, her mother Andrea received a breast cancer diagnosis. A year later, her father Derrick received a prostate cancer diagnosis.

Though she attested that both parents are now “healthy, by the Grace of God,” her intentions were hampered by their unexpected decline in health.

She remarked, in an exclusive interview with the publication, “To be honest, it was just a reminder of all the questions I was already asking myself. Since most of it was just beyond my control, I’ve had to learn to extend myself some grace and forgiveness. I made the best effort I could, and that was on top of teams and business changes. The amount was considerable.

The American singer has previously revealed specifics of her parent’s health and the reasons she wished to support them.

“All I wanted to do was be there for them,” she said. To be honest, their cancer treatments were made easier by music. I can still see my mother receiving chemotherapy on FaceTime.

“Ultimately, pushing through made the circumstances of the last few years feel a bit lighter for my parents, as hard as it was for me to not be with them as much as I wanted to,” Normani said.

To the uninitiated, the 28-year-old singer debuted with her album Dopamine on Friday, June 14.
