Jeremy Renner Reflects on Recovery and Return to Acting After Tragic Accident

Following his tragic car accident, Jeremy Renner is allowing himself time to take on challenging roles.

I just don’t have the energy for it. I don’t have the fuel, Renner said.

I have a tonne of gasoline to give this body, this reality, everything else. I’m not able to go play pretend just yet. Since it takes a lot of time to come here every day for me to think positively, advance, and never stop growing.

When a 14,300-pound snowplow ran over the Hawkeye star on January 1, 2023, the star was helping a family member with a stuck car in three feet of snow.

In addition to serious chest injuries, the accident left him with 38 broken bones and a collapsed lung.

Thinking back on the experience, Renner said it helped him to embrace “divine intervention” and to enjoy the present.

He acknowledges that, although having gained a new outlook on life, he is “very terrified” to be back in front of the camera.

“Am I supposed to write, like, f***ing fiction? It was therefore a difficult line for me to cross,” he said.

It was quite a stretch. I had a really difficult time psychologically getting over that hurdle.”

“I still have trouble with it occasionally, like, not taking it too seriously. Regarding his comeback to acting with Mayor of Kingstown season 3, Renner remarked, “It was easy for me to kind of slide back into it because I’m in a character that I can do very well and I know the show well.”

I could not have accepted the position, though, if it had been extremely difficult. Not difficult in the sense that the show is difficult, but like if I had to go play Dahmer or anything else, which is so far away from me.
