Despite limitations, Katy Perry gives an amazing AFL performance and debuts songs from her 2024 album.
When Katy Perry performed at the AFL Grand Final on Saturday, she left her fans in Australia fans in disbelief after omitting one of her best-loved songs.
The pop sensation wowed the audience at the MCG by singing two brand-new tracks from her most recent album, 143, along with eight of her hits, including Roar, Firework, and California Gurls.
Fans were upset, nevertheless, that she would not sing her 2008 hit Hot N Cold, which became the MasterChef Australia theme song and achieved cult status in Australia.
Social media was swiftly used by viewers to vent their annoyance; one fan tweeted, “As if they didn’t get Katy Perry to play Hot N Cold. Gotta be a joke with how big that song is here.”
One more quip, “Amazed Katy didn’t sing Hot N Cold. Surely that’s the one song that so many footy fans can relate to!”
Despite becoming a household name in Australia when it featured in the MasterChef opening, Channel Ten had to take Hot N Cold down because of the expensive license fees.
Perry said that she had received advice not to sing the hit song because of concerns that doing so would be perceived as biased against the squad.
The pop icon, however, disregarded caution and launched the performance with the inspiring chorus, which a lot of fans have adopted as the unofficial underdog theme.
Perry wowed the crowd with hits throughout his electrifying performance, even in the face of the initial uproar.
She even sang a duet of I Kissed a Girl with Australian singer Tina Arena for the audience.
