Mariah Carey Slams Grammy Awards: ‘They Scammed Me’ Over Only Five Wins Despite Record-Breaking Success

Mariah Carey considered how her record-breaking decades-long career only brought her five Grammys.

With the Grammy Awards, Mariah Carey isn’t holding back.

The iconic diva has only won five Grammys, despite her enormous popularity, which includes 19 No. 1 hits and record-breaking sales. Carey talked candidly about her emotions against the Recording Academy on the Las Culturistas podcast, which is hosted by Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers.

“They scaaaaammed me,” Carey, 55, said in reference to the discrepancy between her accomplishments and Grammy honors. “They toy with me.”

With two Grammy awards in 1991, including Best New Artist, Carey’s career got off to a great start. She dominated the 1990s with a series of No. 1 hits, but she didn’t win any more awards for the remainder of the decade. Her 1996 album Daydream received no awards despite being nominated for six.

The guests and Carey also discussed her highly regarded Butterfly album, which Carey says is her best effort yet received little significant praise.

She shook her head at the injustice and remarked, “It has zero accolades.”

In 2006, Carey was nominated for eight Grammys for The Emancipation of Mimi; she won three of them but lost the biggest categories.

Fans and Carey herself were left wondering why one of the most renowned voices in the industry hadn’t received more Grammy love after her most recent nomination in 2009.
