Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter are exchanging their time-traveling phone booth for the existential stage in a Broadway production.
Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter, stars of ‘Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure,’ will rejoin on Broadway in a revival of Samuel Beckett’s ‘Waiting for Godot.’ This is Reeves’ Broadway debut, and Winter returns to the stage after appearing in children’s shows.
Reeves initiated the revival because he wanted to work with Winter again. Director Jamie Lloyd is impressed with their on-screen chemistry and believes their friendship and sense of humor will add a distinct aspect to the production.
While ‘Bill & Ted’ is recognized for its lightheartedness, ‘Waiting for Godot’ is an existential exploration of hope and despair. The play follows Estragon and Vladimir as they await the coming of the mysterious Godot, engaging in witty banter and intellectual debates.
This Broadway production is especially notable because it marks the 35th anniversary of the original ‘Bill & Ted’ film. The actors’ friendship, which evolved on set, remains a treasured memory for Reeves.
‘Waiting for Godot’ has had four previous Broadway productions, the most recent featuring Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart in 2013. The next revival, directed by Jamie Lloyd, promises a new take on this classic play, infused with the unique charm of Reeves and Winter.
