In a recent revelation by acclaimed rapper J. Cole on Instagram, Colin Kaepernick has shown keen interest in returning to the football field.
J. Cole unveiled a letter, penned by the 35-year-old Kaepernick, directed at Joe Douglas, the general manager of the New York Jets. The authenticity of this letter was later confirmed by Kaepernick’s attorney.
J. Cole wrote, “Colin was hesitant when I asked to make his letter public. My stance was that everyone deserves to know his determination and passion for the game. Eventually, he agreed.” Kaepernick’s iconic last appearance in the NFL dates back to the 2016 season with the San Francisco 49ers. He took a bold stance by kneeling during the national anthem to voice out against racial discrimination.
Though this TakeAKnee movement gained momentum and was supported by many, it wasn’t without its critics. Consequently, Kaepernick decided to terminate his contract in March 2017. The September 21 letter articulates Kaepernick’s aspirations to join and elevate the Jets’ practice squad. He emphasizes, “My primary focus is on gearing up your defense for the weekly challenges.”
The former quarterback’s outreach also responded to Aaron Rodgers’s sudden setback. At 39, Rodgers suffered an Achilles tendon rupture during the Jets’ first game of the season. Even with a successful surgery, Rodgers announced his break on Instagram for the rest of the season.
Kaepernick stated, “The season’s ambition to clinch the championship remains undeterred. The void left by a player of Rodgers’s caliber demands an exceptional replacement to keep Super Bowl aspirations alive.” Acknowledging that Zach Wilson holds the reins as the primary quarterback, Kaepernick suggests his incorporation into the practice squad as a “zero-risk backup plan.”
He confidently mentions, “If the worst-case scenario unfolds and the first-choice quarterback is unavailable, I can step in seamlessly. I comprehend that there might be reservations about my capabilities. This arrangement will enable me to serve the team efficiently and also offer you an opportunity to assess my skills and potential contributions.”
Wrapping up his note, Kaepernick mentions that his rigorous training regimen has been consistent for the past six years. He also cites endorsements from numerous NFL insiders who can vouch for his dedication, character, and skills.
