A fan theory comes true when Disney+’s animated special ‘LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy’ unveils a terrifyingly funny Sith Lord Jar Jar Binks.
This is exciting news: Darth Jar Jar will be revealed in the newest Star Wars special on Disney+.
The animated special LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy (trailer below) features a terrifying Sith Lord version of the much-maligned Gungan character, who was first introduced in the notorious 1999 film The Phantom Menace.
According to the official description, the special’s premise is that “a common nerf-herder named Sig Greebling (Gaten Matarazzo) finds a potent artifact from a secret Jedi temple, radically upending the Star Wars Galaxy. The destiny of everyone hinges on Sig becoming the hero who can put all the parts back together, and he finds himself thrown into an adventure in a new, wondrously wild, and twisted version of the galaxy where good guys are terrible guys are good. For years, fans have conjectured that Jar Jar Binks was a villain in secret, seemingly in an attempt to add some intrigue to the clumsy, sentimental figure.
Original Jar Jar actor Ahmed Best will play the part in the special. Mark Hamill will also provide voiceover for a LEGO Luke Skywalker.
“Working with LEGO and Lucasfilm to rebuild the galaxy has been a dream come true,” said showrunners and executive producers Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem) in a release. Having gathered LEGO Star Wars sets for 25 years, we approached this project with the fervor of a fan, practically building this story brick by brick. Lifelong fans will see some things they never imagined possible, and new fans will find this to be an exciting place to start exploring the LEGO Star Wars universe.
The animated feature highlights the long-standing collaboration between Lucasfilm and the Danish toy maker.
“The groundbreaking partnership between Lucasfilm and The LEGO Group started 25 years ago, and it’s hard to believe,” says executive producer James Waugh. “Over that period, LEGO Star Wars has offered our fans the special ability to use their imaginations and play with the elements of the galaxy in any way they can imagine—and construct. We embarked on our unprecedented Rebuild the Galaxy with that lighthearted attitude in mind. Using the comic genius of two of the best comedy writers I’ve had the pleasure of working with, Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit, we’ve mated LEGO sets to snap together Imperial X-fighters, Rebel TIE-wings, and yes, even Darth Jar Jar. The four-piece special honors everything Star Wars, LEGO, and the wonderful discoveries that can only occur when these two fantastic companies collaborate. Four segments will make up Rebuild the Galaxy, which will premiere on Sept. 13.
