Balcony movement is “common” and “expected,” according to officials.
There are safety worries after a video of rapper Gunna’s Monday night performance at Detroit’s Fox Theatre swaying went viral.
The movement is completely safe, though, according to officials at the historic site.
Gunna posted the footage to social media, and it shows the balcony rocking as people leap and dance to the tunes. With more than 2.6 million views on Instagram, the video made some concertgoers wonder if the balcony was solid. Nah, that joint is going to collapse, one user said.
Ten civilians died in a 2021 crowd rush during a Travis Scott event from his ASTROWORLD tour.
To allay such fears, Ilitch Sports + Entertainment issued a statement that was cited by the Detroit Free Press.
“The kind of movement demonstrated during last night’s concert is common and expected on free-standing balcony structures, to support audience members actively dancing,” the statement said.
The structural engineering design of the balcony includes this capacity. The structure is regularly inspected; the most recent one was carried out in April.
A Detroit icon, the 1928-built Fox Theatre is renowned for its lavish décor and more than 5,000 seats.
