Resuming his well-known persona, Martin Short spoke with the host about his latest book, “What This Comedian Said Will Shock You.”
The most recent Real Time show saw the roles switched, with the fabled Jiminy Glick played by Martin Short emerging from retirement to pose the difficult questions to Bill Maher.
Usually, the show opens with a one-on-one interview with the host, but Maher chose to be the interviewee on Friday to discuss his new book, What This Comedian Said Will Shock You.
Before presenting former talk show host Glick, he stated, “I’ve interviewed authors out here in our opening one-on-one interview spot for years, but now I find myself in the position of being the author of a book on the bestseller list. Interviewing oneself is impossible. We are fortunate tonight, and I wanted someone to interview. We have a master here, maybe the master of the art form.
As the two settled in, Glick said, “I’m going to be excited about this! Quite honestly, this is a welcome change of pace from my usual celebrity interviews.
For the next ten minutes of the performance, Glick posed questions, which made Maher cry with laughter, but then interrupted the comedian in the middle of his response.
“I want to get to this book and I love this book, I love this book,” Glick declared. It is unread by me. I have read it through to the cover, but not within. But word spreads that it’s pretty good.
Throughout the interview, Glick posed a few questions, or lighthearted insults as some would put it, like, “Your book is a victory! To what, low expectations, do you attribute your success? What, other than not having one, do you believe your comic legacy would be? Are there any subjects that, aside from foreplay, are off-limits for you?
Maher occasionally seemed to lull the interviewer to sleep with his long responses.
“Writing a book is amazing, yes it is,” Glick remarked, waking awake. And to rule an area because few others do. You will next most likely receive an offer from Blockbuster Video. And opinions abound in you. I like it since I’ve always appreciated Bill Maher’s viewpoint, as well as yours regarding COVID and the entire issue. I like consulting a club act for medical advice.
Glick completed the discussion as Maher was still laughing, saying, “Your book is the best book I have ever not read. And you know, thank you because I’ve always thought—and I mean this, honest to God, I’m not going to cry—that the dull and tiresome guests better my interviewing skills.
Former U.S. Representative Adam Kinzinger and Governor of New York Andrew Cuomo were the other guests on Friday’s show.
