William’s Lego-themed biopic also stars Busta Rhymes, Gwen Stefani, and Snoop Dogg.
With the premiere of the first teaser for his ground-breaking Lego biography, “Piece by Piece,” Pharrell Williams has taken a creative risk. The picture, which is being directed by Morgan Neville, who is well-known for his critically praised documentary “20 Feet from Stardom,” promises an original cinematic experience.
Starting with Lego avatars of Williams and Neville discussing the idea, the teaser shows them thinking. Williams introduces the notion, asking, “You know what would be cool? Imagine if we used Lego to tell my narrative. A movie that strives to transcend conventional narrative limits is set up by this sentence.
‘Piece by Piece’ is a celebration of creation as much as a story of Williams’ ascent to prominence as one of the world’s top record producers with hits including “Happy,” “Blurred Lines,” and “Milkshake.”
Renowned collaborators including Busta Rhymes, Gwen Stefani, and Snoop Dogg make appearances in the movie as Lego versions.
Williams highlighted in a statement his excitement for the project and the fun and inspiration that Lego gives. “I could not have asked for a finer partner than Morgan when I had this insane idea to narrate this story with Lego blocks. A legend, he is. I’m happy that Focus wanted to work with us, and it gives me great pleasure to share this with the world and welcome people into my universe, he said.
Neville talked about his enthusiasm for the project and recalled how the concept drew him in right away.
Pharrell Williams approached me five years ago with the notion of using Lego animation to help him convey his tale. It was one of those uncommon times when I instantly realized that this was the trip I wanted to take, he said.
Focus Features’ Peter Kujawski commended Williams for his positive and significant influence on world culture and said he was thrilled to work with Lego to realize this idea.
“Pharrell Williams is a true trailblazer whose influence across music, art, and fashion continually reshapes global culture with an unquestionable sense of joy,” he stated.
With an October 11 release date, ‘Piece by Piece hopes to encourage viewers to embrace their creativity and realize their aspirations one Lego brick at a time.
