Disney Branded Television has announced a sequel to the beloved series “Wizards of Waverly Place,” and it’s bringing back some familiar faces. Original stars Selena Gomez and David Henrie are not only reprising their roles but also taking on executive producer duties for the new pilot.
Selena Gomez will make a special appearance as Alex Russo, the character that catapulted her into stardom, while David Henrie returns full-time as Justin Russo. They’ll be joined by fresh talents Janice LeAnn Brown, Alkaio Thiele, and Mimi Gianopulos, bringing new energy to the beloved series.
The sequel, written and executive produced by Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas, who are known for their work on “Raven’s Home,” promises to bring back the charm and wit of the original series. The story picks up with an adult Justin Russo, who has chosen a normal, human life over his wizarding powers. However, his quiet life takes a turn when a young, powerful wizard arrives needing his help.
The revival will introduce us to new characters including Billie, the young wizard portrayed by Janice LeAnn Brown, Roman Russo, Justin’s eldest son played by Alkaio Thiele, and Giada, Justin’s wife, portrayed by Mimi Gianopulos.
Gary Marsh and Andy Fickman join Gomez, Henrie, Elinoff, and Thomas as executive producers, with Fickman also directing. Marsh, a former Disney Channels executive, played a pivotal role in the original series and was instrumental in bringing Gomez into the Disney family.
The original “Wizards of Waverly Place,” created by Todd J. Greenwald, ran from 2007-2012. It followed the Russo siblings as they navigated teenage life while honing their magical skills. The series was a hit and led to a TV special in 2013, reuniting most of the original cast.
This new pilot order comes after years of rumors and fan requests for a revival. It also aligns with Disney Branded Television’s strategy to enhance Disney Channel’s lineup, particularly focusing on multi-camera sitcoms. Meanwhile, Selena Gomez continues her successful run with the hit series “Only Murders In the Building.”
The announcement of the “Wizards of Waverly Place” sequel is sure to excite fans who grew up with the Russo family’s magical antics. As Disney Channel gears up to bring this enchanting world back to life, viewers can look forward to a delightful mix of nostalgia and new adventures.
