Selena Gomez Opens Up About Challenges with Spanish Accent in ‘Emilia Perez’

Selena Gomez discusses her Spanish accent in ‘Emilia Perez’

Following criticism for her Spanish performance in Emilia Perez, Selena Gomez is attempting to clear the air.

The Love On hitmaker, who recently received two Golden Globe nominations, took to TikTok on Sunday, December 8, to respond to a 63-year-old’s criticism of her language skills.

Selena responded in the comments section, “I understand where you are coming from. I’m sorry I did the best I could with the time I was given. Doesn’t take away from how much work and heart I put into this movie.”

This comes after CODA’s Eugenio Derbez referred to the former Disney star’s Spanish as a non-fluent speaker.

During an upcoming episode of the Hablando de Cine podcast, he told Gaby Meza, “I was there with people and every time a scene came, we looked at each other to say, ‘Wow, what is this?'”

He had a change of heart after Selena reacted most graciously.

The Mexican actor quickly admitted his mistake, writing in response, “I truly apologize for my careless comments—they are indefensible and go against everything I stand for. As Latinos, we should always support one another. There’s no excuse. I was wrong, and I deeply admire your career and your kind heart.”

Selena has had a tremendous year, earning multiple prizes for her outstanding performances.
