Once Upon a Mattress will open on Broadway this summer starring Sutton Foster.
A fresh adaptation by Amy Sherman-Palladino of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, the show transfers to Broadway following a two-week run at Encores at Fresh York City Center this past winter. The Lear deBessonet-directed musical will launch on August 12 and run at the Hudson Theatre beginning on July 31.
The Broadway limited engagement will conclude on November 30. Beginning on December 10, it will go to Los Angeles for a four-week run at the Ahmanson Theatre of Center Theatre Groups. It is yet unknown who will be cast for the Broadway run. Foster played opposite Michael Urie at City Center.
An updated version of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Princess and the Pea, the musical is written by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller, and Marshall Barer with music by Mary Rodgers. In the 1959 Broadway premiere, Carol Burnett played Princess Winifred, an openly and occasionally impolite prospective spouse for the prince. There has subsequently been one Broadway revival, featuring Sarah Jessica Parker and starting in December 1996.
Foster has been having a busy theatrical season. She performed in Once Upon a Mattress and then went straight to Broadway to play Mrs. Lovett opposite Aaron Tveit in Sweeney Todd. May 5th marked the end of that run. From February 2022 until January 15, 2023, Foster played opposite Hugh Jackman in The Music Man. Formerly starring in Younger, Foster and Sherman-Palladino collaborated on the television series Bunheads.
Producing the musical are Creative Partners Productions and Seaview. Lorin Latarro will choreograph the Broadway production; David Zinn will design the scenery; Justin Townsend will design the lighting; Andrea Hood will design the costumes; and Kai Harada will handle the sound.
