Viral Backlash: Dua Lipa Quits Social Media Over Dancing Meme Frenzy

Dua Lipa disclosed that she was compelled to leave social media after receiving a lot of criticism for her 2017 viral dancing video.

After releasing her new album, The Radical Optimism, the 28-year-old singer talked to The Guardian about the fallout from becoming a viral online meme. “When I won the best new artist Grammy and people were like, ‘She’s not deserving of it, she’s got no stage presence, she’s not going to stick around,’ when people took that snippet of me dancing online and just turned it into a meme,” she said.

Were those things not painful? Humbling was the experience. I had to log off of Twitter,” the New Rules singer said.

It was more difficult for Dua Lipa to handle the criticism at such a young age because she was still learning how to be a performer and a musical artist.

“I was discovering who I was as a performer and an artist in the public glare. All that was going on when I was still growing up, 22 or 23 years old. One must have tough skin. You must have tenacity, the pop singer said.

It was never the case that I was unable to get out of bed because of my perception of what others thought of me. That degree of concern eluded me. For me, though, that was the time when it was most intense.
