The Winnipeg Jets have announced a temporary shift in leadership following a personal emergency involving the family of head coach Rick Bowness. Judy Bowness, Rick’s wife, experienced a seizure on Sunday evening, prompting his decision to take a leave of absence to be by her side.
In an official statement released Monday, the Jets confirmed Judy’s hospitalization and the ongoing medical evaluations she’s undergoing. Bowness, who celebrated his 68th birthday this year, embarked on his coaching journey with the Jets in July 2022, succeeding Dave Lowry. During his inaugural season, the team showcased a commendable 46-33-3 record, although they faced a setback against the formidable Golden Knights, the eventual Stanley Cup victors, during the playoff’s initial round.
This season has seen the Jets navigating a 2-3-0 start, with their sights set on a showdown against the St. Louis Blues this coming Tuesday.
Stepping into Bowness’s shoes during his absence is Scott Arniel, a veteran of 730 NHL games, who once graced the ice for the Jets between 1982 and 1986. Transitioning into a coaching role post his playing career, Arniel has previously helmed the Columbus Blue Jackets and later served as an assistant coach for multiple NHL teams. Interestingly, both Arniel and Bowness were part of the Jets during the 1984-85 season, albeit in different capacities.
As the team and fans come to terms with this unexpected development, the Jets have expressed their hope for understanding and privacy for the Bowness family during this trying period.
