While an animated sequel, Moana 2, is set to premiere this Thanksgiving, the movie is set to open worldwide on July 10, 2026.
The live-action version of Moana will star 17-year-old Sydney, Australia-born actress Catherine Laga’aia in the starring role, Disney has confirmed. While an animated sequel, Moana 2, is set to debut this Thanksgiving, the movie is set for a worldwide release on July 10, 2026.
Speaking on the part, Laga’aia said, “I’m really excited to embrace this character because Moana is one of my favorites.” With grandparents who are Samoans, she feels privileged to “celebrate Samoa and all Pacific Island peoples, and to represent young girls who look like me.”
John Tui plays Moana’s father, Chief Tui; Frankie Adams plays Sina; and Rena Owen plays Gramma Tala. Director of “Hamilton,” “Grease Live,” and “We Were the Lucky Ones,” Thomas Kail, will oversee the live-action version.
The live-action Moana, which will carry on the tradition of the adored animated original, looks to be an aesthetically spectacular and culturally rich journey.
